2 New Water Tanks at Malaika

Thanks to Mama Sue and the people of Australia, the rain water tanks have been purchased and placed in position. In the Western world we take water for granted without thinking about it as a precious resource and how lucky we are to have a reliable and clean supply. Many areas in Africa struggle to maintain healthy and stable sources of water .Water in rural areas in Tanzania is often carried by the women on their head for great distances. At Malaika, with so many children and now three babies, our everyday usage of water has increased. Much water is used every day in washing, cleaning, toilets, cooking and for drinking. Thanks to your generous support and donation, these rain water collection tanks totalling 30,000 litres, have taken us another step towards being self-sustainable. As Malaika is in a rural area, the cost of water is expensive.

Malaika welcomes 3 new babies!

In July we were happy to receive 3 new babies at Malaika. Joshua (left) born 2nd June , Agnes(middle) born 3rd May and Febronia (right) born 28th April. They are very healthy, much adored by their older sisters and brothers and gaining weight rapidly. We have employed a nurse who is looking after them. They are very good babies.

Completion of the Lufthansa-help alliance project

We have completed the report on the joint project: "Solar Power for Malaika"between the German Airline Lufthansa - help alliance and Malaika Childrens Home. The project enabled the Malaika childrens home to acquire and install additional solar panels, a solar powered refrigerator and lights and sockets for occasional electricity usage. The project has resulted in a big improvement for the Malaika children - we thank Lufthansa help alliance for their support!!

Hellen recently had an operation for an umbilical hernia and is recovering well. We give our thanks to Mama Sue for her support and big contribution towards Hellen's medication. Pole sana Hellen and thank you to all the nurses and Dr Maria at Selian Hospital.

First Communion Celebration

The children were invited to a First Communion party in May by Mama Francesca and Baba Carlo. Their children Leonardo and Serena were amongst the children that made their first Communion. The children had a wonderful day playing with other children as well as having lunch, sodas and playing on the trampoline. They were all very well behaved.

The rains have arrived!

Malaika is looking very green after all the recent rain. There is plenty of grass for the cows and the shamba is flourishing. The rain was very welcome so that the vegetables could grow enabling Malaika to become self-sufficient. The maize will be picked in August. This season will ensure a very good crop.

"On 17th April, Michael & I hosted a Black Tie Dinner at "Buckeys Creek" Augathella, Australia to fund raise for rain water harvesting at Malaika. 32 of our loyal friends gathered at our home to enjoy a night of Tanzanian food and fun. The night included auctions of 3 paintings done by my friends, a Tanzanian table cloth purchased from The Blue Heron, and a Tanzanian shawl. We were entertained by 2 exceptional young girls whose talents were auctioned - one sang and one played the violin.

As well as an outline of the happenings at Malaika our friends were treated to fun games...prizes included a pair of maasai shoes for the winner of the thong throwing competition!

The night was financially rewarding with 4,000,000 TSH raised for Malaika. Thank you to our small community (population 660) for their generosity and support.

I was delighted to be able to inform Mama Jutta to proceed with the project and to purchase rain water tanks for Malaika. I cannot wait to return...."

Our wonderful Mama Francesca organized a course for developing communication skills for the Malaika staff. They were informed as to what children are capable of at certain ages. For themselves, they were taught how to identify their own feelings, accept and express them in a safe way and decide what is needed to feel better. They were also trained to adapt a positive attitude to better deal with and understand personal stress and develop stress management skills. Thank you Francesca!

Dentisti a Baraa

The children visited a Dentist recently! The dentists were all volunteers from the United States working on teeth for orphanages and schools at the Baraa Dispensary in Moshono. It has been a long and busy winter (Summer, for you) for us at Malaika Children's Home. We have had so many new additions and changes, and here are just a few of the big ones:

Our glorious and beloved Mama Sue has been with us again; her THIRD visit and we will have her back again next May for a fourth time. On top of her devotion to the children, we are also so grateful for her generous gift of a beautiful cow to Malaika. On top of this, our lovely new cow gave birth to a calf just a few weeks ago. The children now have the milk that they need. Thank you so much Mama Sue!

And speaking of milk! Our little Sara is now 7 months old and holding her milk bottle by herself. Her favorite thing is her milk and she prefers it over any other food. What an amazing gift Sue has given us!

Sonja is a volunteer from Germany who stayed with us for one month and got very
attached to our little mtoto Sarah who came to our center during last month.
Sarah is only 3 months old and has a very young mother who is only 17 years
old and is an orphan herself. The mother of Sarah found some people in the
community who have paid for her education and she will take her little angel
back as soon as she is finished with her studies. We are very grateful to Sonja for showing Sarah such love and care while she has stayed with us.

Spring Updates

Just as April showers bring May flowers, so is your patience rewarded at long last with an update on all our goings on here at Malaika Children's Home. We have had a great many new additions to our growing farm as well as new volunteers to help things run smoothly in our home. Christina, a Volunteer from Sweden who came over with Babu John is about to finish her sojourn here and we are so sad to see her leave us. We have greatly enjoyed her company and we are all very proud of the work she has accomplished during her stay. Thank you Christina!

Our garden has also had some new additions. In the picture you can see the changes as well as the cow and chicken huts in the background. If you look carefully, you can also see the beautiful bench that was made by Babu John in memory of our dearest Matteo, the founder of the Malaika Farm Project. How very proud he would be...
And of course, with all this mention of our angel, Babu John; we would be loathe not to introduce him! Babu John has been working very hard for us here at Malaika. In the photo, you can see him proudly pushing his cart that he has made himself and donated to Malaika Children's Home. The cart is designed with the purpose in mind of transporting some small foodstuffs such as veggies, eggs and soon milk(!) from the garden to the house itself. We are so very grateful to our friend, Babu John and thank him again and again for his hard work and generosity.

Also! The plantings that Mama Anna and Baba Martin have been so vigorously caretaking are beginning to bear fruit. Literally! Here is a picture of our banana tree that the watoto cannot wait to sample.

Of course we are ever reminded by every beautiful growing thing on our grounds, that none of it would have been possible without our dearly missed friend and angel, Matteo. Matteo passed away last summer and we miss him very much. Godspeed, Matteo. And thank you for your many gifts.

We have our Mama Sue back with us again! Mama Sue came to us in 2007 to spend six whole months working at Malaika. After a year back home in Australia, she has returned to us again. Mama Sue is a trained nurse with many years experience. She is incredibly hard-working and brings a new level of organization to the daily routine at Malaika. Mama Sue is especially devoted to our youngest children; always singing songs with them and teaching them puzzles and games. We are so honored to have her with us once again!

Through the generosity of Malaika's new friends, Barton and Valerie Bryan and their organization, COIN (Children's Orphanage International Network) Malaika now has it's own playground! We have a swingset, rings, carousel, teeter-totters and a magnificent slide. The construction and installation took two weeks-along with one back-breaking day of shovelling sand... ouch! The watoto are overjoyed and the opening day was truly a joy to behold. We are so pleased and proud, and ever so grateful to our friends from COIN. Thank you Barton and Val!

Malaika Gets Water and Electricity!!

Malaika has some new arrivals!! With the incredible generosity of Italy's PEDROLLO Srl, we now have a generator and water pump! This is such exciting news for us, with the addition of pump and gennie the children will have running water in the house as well as electricity for refridgerator, lights etc etc. We couldn't be happier about this (especially Mama Anna who has been carrying water buckets for the vegetable garden every day!) and send very special thank yous to our angels in Italy. Nutritionist visit at Malaika Childrens Home

On the 2nd of June Marie visited Malaika, Marie is a highly experienced Nutritionist. She came to train and advise the staff about the benefits of giving children healthy food - from Green Banana's and Potato to Meat and Rice. She went through all fruits and vegtables and advised on the nutritional value. This will help us know the right nutrients that it needed in order to achieve high levels of physical, mental and emotional health, and promote long life and the absence of ill health.
It was an excellent experience for the staff who were all very interested. They asked plenty of questions and were very enthusiatic! Marie will return to Malaika to see how the staff are getting on with their new found knowledge.

Babies day out!

Lisa, Beccy and Sister Carmelina took the little kids to a nearby playground for some swinging, sliding and sand-boxing.
After a somewhat timid beginning, the kids had a blast. The kiddie swings were a big favorite, as was making sand castles with Sister Carmelina (a teacher at St. Monica's-the watoto's school). It was a fun afternoon, and the kids celebrated with fruit juice at one of the picnic tables before we left and a they all had a well-earned nap on the car ride home...

Malaika Gate

At the end of May the fundi's put up the Malaika Gate, it looks wonderful.

We have to wait at least a month for the gate to function as the concrete needs to settle. As soon as the gate is usable we will fence it off with the wire fencing.

Sister Carmelina

Sister Carmelina has joined Malaika CHildrens home 2 days a week to help look after and play with the children. Sister is from St Monica's where the children attend school.
She comes on Tuesday and Saturday and the children love her as she enjoys playing games, singing and dancing with them.

Baby Baraka is our youngest child at Malaika, and boy, is he tough! Baraka always picks himself up, dusts himself off and keeps playing no matter what. He has big deep eyes and is always looking for a new adventure.

Comfort wants to go to school so much! He will sometimes march determindly towards the road and announce his intention. "Shule!!" (School) Comfort loves motorcycles and he is very creative. He is an old soul who has developed very rapidly and is looking like he will be a very good student. So much so that we call him "The President"!

Baby Neema is our welcome wagon here at Malaika. She will throw herself into your arms with all the love in her heart. She is starting to talk and her favorite word at the moment is 'atcha', which basically means 'no' and she has been singing it all over the house.

Lisa is our wild child. She has had some troubles with focus in the past, but recently has been showing some real improvement. She has just started school and always comes home very jaunty and full of energy and enthusiasm.

Godbless is the resident policeman of Malaika. He is very quick to report wrongdoings or unfairness. He is also our resident monkey and his favorite jungle gym of choice is whatever new and unsuspecting person has arrived at Malaika. Godbless is very bright and has been getting excellent reports in school.

Sia was the first little girl to Malaika. She has just started school, and she says she loves it. She is a little shy, but inevitably everyone who ever comes to Malaika falls in love with her. In fact, when she first arrived we had to tell the volunteers to put her down, or she'd never have walked anywhere!

Helen is gentle and studied in everything she does. She is a bit of a loner, but she has adopted Baraka as her own. After school, he is the first person she approaches and she carries him into the house.

Samuel

Samuel is our 'bishop'. Most of the time he is as serious as can be, but often he breaks into wild laughter. He loves getting into things, clothing, tubs of water, and of course, buckets...

Neema

Neema is a quiet and graceful angel. She is always looking out for the wellfare of the younger children, especially with her younger brother Samuel. She is doing well in school and shows great promise as a student.

Festo

Festo is our resident jester. He is famous for breaking anything that he gets his hands on. He loves attention and will do all manner of athletic feats after school while saying in english, "Look at me!!"

Bettie

Betty is toddling around Malaika with purpose and joy. She always has a smile on her face and loves the quiet moments one on one best of all. She also loves to hold hands with the other children and can often be seen hand in hand with Baraka.

Fadhili

Fadhili is also in school and speaking a little english. He is very sweet and reserved and always helpful around the house. He keeps a very serious face most of the time, but was caught in a fun pre-nap moment.

Regina

Regina is in school and speaking very good english these days. She is dynamic, opinionated and loves to play Mama to all the other children.
